FeedHenry is One of Only 35 Companies Selected to Compete in NodeJam at NodeSummit, San Francisco, January 24-25

Node Summit, San Francisco, CA – January 24, 2012 – FeedHenry, the developer of cloud-based mobile application solutions, has launched the first enterprise mobility solution that allows developers to build HTML5, JavaScript and hybrid apps with a fully integrated Node.js backend-as-a-service. It is the first commercially available mobile app platform-as-a-service that allows developers to use the same JavaScript skills to build a mobile app client and powerful backend functionality that leverages the non-blocking, event-driven I/O architecture of Node.js. By building in one code base developers increase their efficiency and speed app development while cutting the costs of deploying apps for multiple mobile platforms.

In the FeedHenry studio, developers can now build highly complex and visually stunning mobile apps using HTML5 and JavaScript that will run as native apps on all major smartphones and tablet devices. These apps can be developed using any third-party JavaScript library or HTML5 UI/UX toolkit and connect through RESTful API calls to a fully integrated server-side backend. This server-side business and integration logic is developed in Node.js using Javascript. Developers can use any of the standard FeedHenry APIs for integration, caching, storage, or encryption and are free to include other third party JavaScript libraries.

At build-time, the client code is pushed to a build farm where the native binary is created; the server-side code is staged with a single command to the FeedHenry cloud or to any public or private cloud supporting Node.js. The mobile application platform automatically synchronizes the app client with the Node.js backend and provides automatic scaling, for the entire solution as well as built-in redundancy, security, lifecycle management and reporting.

FeedHenry is one of only 35 companies selected to compete in the Node Summit’s NodeJam, January 24-25, 2012 in San Francisco. FeedHenry was also named as one of the winners in Yankee Group’s “2012 Mobility Predictions: A Year of Living Dangerously”. FeedHenry’s enterprise development platform was listed as a winner alongside Antenna Systems, Pyxis and Salesforce.com’s Heroku in the category “HTML5 Will Cross the Enterprise Tipping Point.”

“As enterprises mature with their mobility initiatives and start getting into more sophisticated apps where they need complex integration with the backend and the cloud, the play will shift to the server side,” said Cathal McGloin, CEO, FeedHenry. “The server side will become a crucial part of every mobile initiative as enterprises see how much more they can do with apps to increase revenue and boost employee productivity. Apps are fast becoming the new tool within organizations, but with that there’s the headache on the server side with security, scalability, performance and management. With Node.js, FeedHenry’s mobile application platform offers an easy way to build mobile app solutions for the enterprise that takes care of the server side functionality.”

FeedHenry is the only company to offer a fully integrated suite where developers can build the client side code and the server-side code using JavaScript and deploy to any Node.js environment with a single push. FeedHenry helps enterprises go from concept to prototype in six to eight weeks.

About FeedHenry’s Node.js Solution

Node.js is a development tool that is specifically designed for server-side execution; it offers a high degree of efficiency and performance via an event-driven I/O environment and is ideal for building sophisticated mobile apps that require integration to backend systems. FeedHenry offers a completely integrated set of enterprise tools for building, deploying, and managing enterprise mobile apps. Developers can access the FeedHenry AppStudio development environment, or download the FHC (the FeedHenry Command Line tool) using npm, the node package manager, and use the same programming language for the entire solution. FeedHenry’s server-side business and integration logic is developed in Node.js using JavaScript. Developers can use any of the standard FeedHenry APIs for integration, caching, storage, or encryption and can also use third party JavaScript Node.js modules.

New Mobile App Platform to launch through O2 in the first quarter 2012

11 January 2012

Telefónica Digital today announced an exclusive partnership with FeedHenry – a leading developer of cloud-based mobile application solutions – to launch a platform that enables businesses of any size build their own mobile apps. The service will be launched by O2 in the UK during Q1 2012 before being rolled out to other Telefónica markets.

The subscription-based platform will enable any enterprise – from SME to multinational corporate – to create apps and deploy them across Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 and Nokia operating systems as well as the Mobile Web.

“This partnership will be welcome news for any organisation that recognises the power of mobile apps and how they can drive increased revenue, boost employee productivity and enhance the overall customer experience,” said Matthew Key, Chairman & CEO of Telefónica Digital. “We’ve enjoyed great success launching a similar platform in Ireland earlier this year and already list Aer Lingus, Diageo and PWC among our customers.”

“Demand for mobile application development and management solutions has exploded as businesses of all types and sizes recognise the importance of mobile apps in driving business success,” states Cathal McGloin, CEO, FeedHenry. “Telefónica and FeedHenry help businesses accelerate their mobile initiatives with a comprehensive cloud platform solution that is cost-effective, secure and scalable”.

“The world of mobility is changing at such a fast rate,” said Ronan Fitzpatrick, Director of Network Distribution of Aer Lingus. “Staying ahead of the curve in a competitive market, required a comprehensive mobile app solution that integrated with our backend systems. The app has delivered enhanced service to our passengers and an attractive ROI for Aer Lingus. The partnership between Telefónica and FeedHenry is a model for new-age enterprise mobility.

Under the exclusive agreement, O2 will be the only communications provider in the UK to provide a route to market for the FeedHenry Mobile Application Platform, which allows apps to be developed in standard web technologies – such as HTML5, JavaScript and CSS – and deployed across all major mobile devices with a single click. O2 will act as a one-stop-shop for the service, managing the contractual and billing relationship with the customer.

Crucially, the partnership will give enterprise customers access to a wide range of security features and functionality, including mobile application management, secure VPN & HTTPS connections, security and encryption toolkits.

FeedHenry applies its own in-house expertise as well as world-leading application development capabilities through a partner program to ensure industry leading skills are deployed to meet the customer’s design specifications and requirements.

The agreement with FeedHenry was struck by Telefónica Digital which sees global partnerships as a key route for bringing innovative products and services to Telefónica’s operating businesses. It follows the success of the partnership between FeedHenry and O2 in Ireland and paves the way for the service to be rolled-out to other Telefónica businesses in due course.

With more mobile devices being shipped than any other type of computing platform, combined with the ubiquitous “anytime, anywhere” nature of mobile devices, mobile is fast becoming the biggest channel to market . But typically a company’s first shot at a mobile strategy begins and ends with “lets build an app”. Would you equate an advertising strategy with just “making an advert”?

A sound mobile strategy must integrate with the company’s overall business strategy – sales, marketing, technology, HR, etc. How many mobile apps have no links to a company’s website? How many websites have no mention of the ability to download an app? How many apps are built without understanding the underlying app objectives and measuring results? Mobile is big but it’s still a sub-component of an overarching company strategy to enthuse and delight both your existing customers and your new prospects.

Your mobile strategy must dovetail into your overall marketing and business strategy. Within the mobile context you must understand the most compelling vectors for your customers and how to maximise your reach and impact.

Your starting point should be the leading mobile smartphone vendors:

● Apple and iOS

● Google and Android

● RIM and BlackBerry OS

The Neilsen numbers speak for themselves:

Within these segments there are two device form factors to consider:

● Phone: Small screen. Touch input (primarily), ability to make phone calls, screen dimensions limited to a device that can be comfortably held in one hand.

● Tablet: Touch input, Larger screen size, no phone calls, typically held in two hands may often come with a hard keyboard.

The final facet of Mobile is the distribution mechanism:

● App Stores : Build and package services in an App for distribution via stores

● Mobile Web : Deliver services via the browser and a web connection

The Mobile web is the bridge linking your mobile strategy to your web strategy (and ultimately your overarching marketing strategy). Forrester tells us that app users are just as likely to use the mobile web as an app and that its not an either/or choice. Apps should be viewed as a tactic or a tool to facilitate the overall strategy. A mix of weapons is required to win the war.

If we look at HTML5 as the substrate that weaves our strategy together then we can see that an App is just a small piece of that mix.

There is a mobile maturity hierarchy that companies must move through.

Each step up through the maturity curve must support the levels below in order to succeed fully and on this progressive curve the only game in town for every step is HTML5. Apps are undoubtedly a key element of the strategy but they are only an element. The “best” solution is always a subjective choice. So while the native app purists bemoan the supposedly poor user experience and wax lyrical about “native look and feel” the rest of the world is racing towards a HTML5 user experience that can play both in the app and the browser world.

It’s impossible to ignore the growing adoption and acceptance of HTML5-based app development. Yankee Group just released their 2012 Mobility Predictions where they forecast “HTML5 will cross the Enterprise Tipping Point”, recognizing that “the rise of HTML5 in the enterprise spells the beginning of the end”.

FeedHenry embraced HTML5 in 2008 as the only way to support a comprehensive mobile strategy. While some customers needed convincing to accept HTML5 versus native app development we agree with Yankee that these days are passing. The more enterprises move along the app maturity curve, the more they will reap the rewards of employing HTML5 technologies. App development will be easier, faster, cheaper and more future-proof while maintaining the same user-experience as native apps. Also, we concur with Forrester that Apps + Mobile Web are two sides of the same coin and you need both to confidently deliver a compelling mobile strategy.

Our enterprise customers Aer Lingus, Diageo, O2, Independent News & Media, Health New England and many more support the HTML5 approach. Linkedin and the Financial Times have also embraced HTML5 and many more will follow suit as we prepare to ring in the New Year 2012.

At FeedHenry, the PhoneGap open-source framework is an integral part of our AppStudio in our cloud-based Mobile Application Platform . AppStudio allows developers to build enterprise-grade apps in HTML5, JavaScript, CSS and deploy them to multiple platforms. This makes app development accessible to a broader base of software developers whilst offering our enterprise clients a more cost-effective and simpler solution and overcoming the barriers that mobile OS fragmentation poses.

PhoneGap’s open source framework was the perfect fit for FeedHenry, aligning perfectly with our strategy and inspiring us to provide a service to build native mobile apps for multiple mobile devices…all in the cloud. Developers can create powerful apps using the FeedHenry AppStudio by accessing native device features of iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7 and RIM mobile devices thanks to PhoneGap’s cross-platform APIs. Integrating PhoneGap into our solution has also made it possible for us to easily extend the standard APIs to provide customized client-side solutions to our business clients and partners. All PhoneGap APIs co-exist with FeedHenry APIs, enriching our developer solution.

For us, PhoneGap provides the right client-side solution for our products. It’s easier for us to extend, update and maintain it. For our business customers, PhoneGap allows them avail of more accessible app development skills (HTML5, Javascript, CSS) and deploy to multiple mobiles devices from a single code base, thereby reducing the cost and time to develop mobile apps.

Recognizing that security, scalability and affordability are key concerns for CIOs executing mobile app strategies, the FeedHenry solution is built on the principles of Simple, Secure and Scalable. Our AppStudio makes app development and deployment “simple”, following the same philosophy as PhoneGap i.e. build once, wrap and deploy to multiple platforms – all open source and powered from the cloud. Thanks to our energetic and forward-looking team, we can offer businesses, partners and developers a complete solution on a single cloud platform. Besides app development, build farm and deployment, the FeedHenry platform also supports secure integration with backend systems (our backend-as-a-service), enterprise app store distribution (our App Manager) and full app lifecycle management and reporting (our App Analytics).

FeedHenry chose PhoneGap for multiple reasons. It’s hard to ignore the fact that the days of big projects and long implementations are over so our technology strategy and vision has been based on open, flexible and collaborative development, powered from the cloud. PhoneGap is built on a similar foundation, supporting the widest range of mobile devices, committed to open-source projects, and enabling development using standard web technologies. The enormous developer community that PhoneGap has attracted is a testimony to their success and offers all the benefits of developer collaboration and contributions. No wonder, Adobe picked Nitobi/PhoneGap for their recent acquisition.

Thanks to the PhoneGap community for a great framework that provides significant benefits for FeedHenry’s developers, enterprise customers and partners.
